The flag of New Mexico, known as the "New Mexico State Flag," features a striking and symbolic design. It consists of a vibrant red field with a centered yellow sun symbol known as the Zia sun symbol. This ancient symbol, derived from the Zia Pueblo people, consists of a red sun with four sets of radiating lines, each representing one of the sacred four directions—north, south, east, and west. The Zia symbol also embodies the four seasons, the four elements (earth, air, fire, and water), and the four stages of life (childhood, youth, adulthood, and old age). The flag’s colors—red and yellow—reflect the traditional colors of the Zia people and evoke the fiery desert landscape and the sun-soaked skies of New Mexico.
