In the wake of John F. Kennedy's tragic assassination during a motorcade procession in Dallas, Texas, on November 22, 1963, the U.S. government swiftly moved to honor the memory of the beloved young president through the creation of a new coin. The U.S. Treasury reached out to renowned coin designer Gilroy Roberts mere hours after Kennedy's passing, signaling the beginning of an important numismatic endeavor. Just weeks later, on February 11, 1964, a ceremonial event marked the initial striking of the Kennedy half dollar—a coin that would replace the Franklin half dollar.
The Kennedy half dollar garnered immediate and widespread popularity, in large part due to its silver composition. The rush to collect 1964 Kennedy halves led to significant hoarding, resulting in limited circulation. Many experts posit that this early hoarding is a major contributing factor to the coin's scarcity in circulation today.
The year 1964 stands out as the sole year when circulating Kennedy half dollars were minted with a 90 percent silver composition. It was during this year that four distinct types of Kennedy half dollars emerged: the 1964 Philadelphia, 1964-D (Denver), 1964 proof, and 1964 heavily accented hair proof.
In response to the unprecedented demand for this new coin, the U.S. Mint produced hundreds of millions of 1964-dated Kennedy half dollars. The Philadelphia mint contributed 273,304,004 coins, while the Denver mint added 156,205,446 to the tally. Additionally, 3,950,762 proof coins were minted. Each of these historic coins carries an approximate value of $8 when silver prices are $20 per ounce.
