Design Overview & Historical Significance
In 2020, the U.S. Mint evaluated more than 35 design concepts before selecting Emily Damstra’s powerful new eagle artwork to usher in the next chapter of the American Silver Eagle series. Her design captures the national bird descending with an oak branch — a symbol of strength, resilience, and America’s national heritage.
The obverse features Weinman’s iconic Walking Liberty, originally introduced in 1916. The enhanced design now includes sharper details and Weinman’s “AW” initials, restoring the artist’s original intent with modern minting technology.
2026 Release Details
The 2026 American Silver Eagle (Type 2) shows Liberty in left-profile relief, walking toward the rising sun with the inscriptions LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the year of issue. On the reverse, Damstra’s dynamic eagle design emphasizes motion, purpose, and strength as the eagle carries an oak branch — America’s national tree.
Damstra described her vision to the U.S. Mint:
“My inspiration for this design grew from a desire to show our national bird—with all of the values it embodies—in a unique way… I liked the idea of including an oak branch, since the oak is America’s national tree and a symbol of strength.”
